Waterhole Hide at Mhondoro offers intimate encounters with wildlife from a unique vantage point and is first and only luxury lodge in South Africa to do so. It is connected to the main lodge through a 65 meter tunnel and gives you a chance to observe magnificent animals as they as they approach the waterhole.

Here, you don’t have to wait for your scheduled game drive to get up close and personal with the most incredible wildlife. Amongst many other animal species such as baboons and warthogs, elephants are regular visitors to this waterhole. In addition to safaris, this gives guests a unique opportunity to observe these fascinating giants of the bush in your own time.

But that’s not where the marvels of this lodge end. The main lodge is the vibrant heart of the camp. We love the impeccably decorated structures that combine African and European contemporary features.

In fact, this is your jumping off point for numerous different bush walks, safaris and other experiences. Welgevonden Game Reserve is home to over 50 different mammals, including the Big 5. As a matter of fact, the diversity of habitats is perfect to host a wide range of wildlife. Grassy plains abound with antelope, from the largest eland to the little duiker. You’ll also find rare species of brown hyena, aardwolf, pangolin and aardvark. Not to mentioned the cheetah, lion and leopard that are regularly seen close by. Oh, did we mention some of these are best seen on a night safari.

And when you’re done exploring, you can cuddle up in a cosy corner next to a fireplace on one of the expansive wooden decks. Here, you will enjoy the roaring fire and the stunning view of the waterhole and the reserve.
